Staying Connected in Spirit and Community

Pastoral Reflections

In this installment of Pastoral Reflections, Pastor Bob reflects on summer renewal and calls the church to reconnect at Rally Sunday, reminding us we are one Body of Christ.

Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.

1 Corinthians 12:27

I hope you have all had a good summer. This has been a hot and dry summer. The waterfalls in town are just trickles. I hope it has been a time for you to get away from the day-to-day realities of life and find some renewal. If you travelled or if you stayed home – the new word for that is staycation, perhaps you took day trips – something now called a daycation – whatever you were doing this summer, we were never far from each other in spirit. In fact, spiritually we remained connected as one body.

This is an exciting reality to contemplate. We are connected to each other. I have always been fascinated by conjoined twins. Two individuals physically connected. They may have different likes and dislikes, they may not always agree, but they must find ways to work out these differences, because they are connected with each other. They do not have the luxury of parting company for separate vacations. If one wishes to visit the ocean and the other the mountains, they have to work that out.

As members of the Body of Christ, we have greater flexibility. We have gone off in many directions this summer. We have each seen something different; we each had unique experiences, and we each returned with new stories to share. As we return to regular routines and responsibilities, we also come together to reconnect with the rest of the body of believers in Church. Rally Sunday is a chance for us to reconnect with friends, to begin work on old projects, and to establish new ministries.

With worship on September 7th, Rally Sunday, we reaffirm our connection to the Body of Christ here at Union Congregational Church. We will bring with us new ideas and insights, new vitality and energy we gained from our summer experiences. I look forward to hearing the stories from your summer and sharing mine with you.

Shalom,
Bob
